"When people who are 'definitely not racist' vote for someone who definitley is, what am I supposed to tell my children?"
Coracle strives to ask challenging questions and to give a voice to people from all walks of life, telling stories with imagination, intensity and honesty.
New Writing and bold story-telling are at the heart of our work
CORACLE are a company dedicated to collaborative work and nurturing new writing talent, particularly in North East England.
We are an associate company of Alphabetti Theatre, and a programme partner on their new-writing programme JUST WRITE. Our work has been funded by Arts Council England and supported by Community Foundation Tyne and Wear. We've also just launched PlayStream - a podcast of audio dramas.
“A Powerful, entertaining drama. This is a great production”
Best of Fringe 2017 for OVERDUE, North East Theatre Guide.
Coracle began developing work exploring physicality, dance and text in London in 2009. Their first full-scale production was a devised piece called BIRD OF PRAY which played at The Courtyard and in the Branching Out Festival / Rosemary Branch Theatre.
"Bird Of Pray is a challenging and intelligent play. It cleverly crosses the borders between dance, performance art and acting and proved to be a show with a big heart that deserves to be recognized as a unique and memorable piece."
Audience feedback for BIRD OF PRAY
The ensemble pursued solo careers for several years and then in 2017 Matt established CORACLE NORTH EAST with writer and performer Arabella Arnott, with a focus on New Writing. Their first production was Trajectory, a double bill of new plays, followed later that year with their critically acclaimed production of Overdue (winner Best at Fringe 2017 / NE Theatre Guide) - the first full production at Alphabetti Theatre's new home in Newcastle. In 2018 Coracle produced and commissioned Suffragette - 4 new short plays celebrating the centenary of women gaining the right to vote, which they performed alongside an original 'Suffrage Play' from 100 years ago. 2019 saw Down To Zero by Lizi Patch (winner Best North East Fringe 2019 / CNS on Theatre) ) performed alongside work showcasing quality artistic work from women aged 40+ - a demographic under-represented both on and off stage in the theatre.
"Suffragette is both intelligent and accessible. Through five poignant plays ...believable characters and recognisable situations combine to make a worthwhile and entertaining evening at the theatre."
